The detox diet is a highly restrictive one, which is the main complaint of most doctors. The detox approach usually entails a diet that can be very restrictive even if for a short period of time. There are warnings of possible negative side effects for teenagers and younger children.

The number of different ways to detox are widespread throughout the world and it isn?t possible to mention all of them in this report. Chinese, International Producers Beat Path to Co-Productions

BEIJING -- Producers and movie industry advocates visiting the Beijing International Film Festival?s first full day on Sunday from around the world joined their Chinese counterparts in a summit to slice and dice the potential perks and pitfalls of making movies together.

Co-productions can save foreign producers money and increase their chances of distribution in China?s tightly controlled but booming market, where gross ticket sales rose 64% to $1.5 billion in 2010 despite a 20-title cap on the Hollywood films that out-gross locals films two-to-one.

And Chinese companies stand to benefit from co-productions, too, at a time when the central government is encouraging local producers to hone their skills by working with foreign experts -- thus helping to boost China?s soft power around the world.

Zhou Tiedong, president of the summit-organizing China Film Promotion International, said 48 of the 49 Chinese films that had some recent export success, were made with foreign participation: ?This shows the promising future of co-productions,? Zhou said.

Mike Ellis, the Hollywood studios? lead lobbyist in Asia at the Motion Picture Association of America said that despite the desire to work together and the great potential gain, the level of uncertainty in China?s business climate was ?really difficult for visiting producers? working for publicly traded companies that must answer to investors.

?China must look at easing the process of script approval,? said Ellis, who?s been working for the MPAA in Asia for 13 years and has seen projects get stuck in red tape at the Film Bureau. ?Scripts are approved and then they?re not approved,? he said, referring to moving goalposts often set by the State Administration of Radio Film and Television.

Director Gao Qunshu said that most co-productions thus far had succeeded in only one of the home markets involved. Even Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, a big hit in the U.S. in 2001, saw mediocre returns in China.

Gao said the problem lay partly in impatience among inexperienced investors demanding films be made quickly. ?Chinese investors don?t have any idea how to make a film,? Gao said. ?They?re shortsighted. Chinese blockbusters tend to be dark, because critics don?t take lighthearted stories seriously. But China has had a hard time finding new ways of telling stories.?

Yu Dong, CEO of the Nasdaq-listed Bona Film Group, whose 15 films last year commanded a 10 percent share of the Chinese marketplace, sounded as if he agreed: ?We?ve have good box office for romantic comedies, but of our 500 films each year, there are still a limited number of stories. This is a problem under the current censorships and we must seek a new breakthrough. We cannot make 500 films based only on kung fu and comedy. Real flourishing will depend on the change in the kinds of stories we can tell.?

Corky Kessler, a lawyer for independent filmmakers visiting Beijing for the first time, said he would encourage his clients, many of whom use incentives offered by 37 U.S. states and the federal government to consider spending some of the money they save in the U.S. on making their movies in China.

Asked about the biggest challenge she faces in working in China -- where some subjects are politically fraught and deemed inappropriately challenging to one-party rule -- producer Janet Yang, whose last film here, Disney?s China High School Musical, was a disappointment, remains upbeat.

?Things are pleasant and easy here. While SAG actors are asking for private dressing rooms, Chinese actors like to hang out with each other,? said Yang, who?s been coming to China to work on films since the early 1980s.? ?In some ways it?s easier to shoot here. People here tend to be friends with one another. There?s not as much back-biting here and sense that everyone?s trying to make things better for each other. We know what the hot button issues are, such as a movie about Tibet, then we avoid them, but then the space you can work within is actually very large.?

As to the Facebook app, it's coming some time later in the month, and will let you view and add your friends, share photos and videos "seamlessly," access Facebook Chat, and view and interact with the news Feed. Both should be getting extensive demos at BlackBerry World, which is taking place this week, and we'll be sure to have a gander and report our findings. Weary Of The Pressure, The Voice Of The Triple Crown Races Walks Away

It's called the "most exciting 2 minutes in sports."

But the Kentucky Derby ? and the months surrounding that race and the other two legs of the Triple Crown series ? were an incredibly stressful part of Tom Durkin's life.

So the man who's been calling those races for NBC Sports over the last decade is walking away, as New York's Daily News reported this morning. He'll continue to be the track announcer in Saratoga Springs and New York State's other major tracks, but he won't be on the air when millions tune in to see who wins the run for the roses.

"For three months a year [leading to the Derby and through the Belmont Stakes], I'd be walking around with this pit in my stomach," the 60-year-old Durkin told All Things Considered host Melissa Block this afternoon. "You wake up worrying and you go to bed worrying."

He tried drug therapy, hypnosis and ? Durkin jokes ? even exercise and healthy eating.

But he would still feel like he was on a three-month adrenaline rush.

"It's like being a baseball player," said Durkin, and "the Derby is like being at bat [when] you're down one run, the man's at second, the count's 3-2, [and] it's the seventh game of the World Series. It's that kind of intensity."

One call that Durkin says he wishes he could do over is the finish of the 2009 Kentucky Derby, when Mine That Bird came out of nowhere to win and he didn't see what was happening until the very last moment.

The Associated Press says that Larry Collmus, the track announcer at Monmouth and Gulfstream Park, is expected to replace Durkin on NBC.

Google Appears To Be Testing A Sparse, Ugly New Results Page

Whoa there tipsters, slow down. We?ve just been bombarded with tips coming our way that Google has rolled out a new-look search results page. Scanning Twitter, it looks like there are in fact a lot of people seeing this. And boy is it ugly.

I mean, it?s great that Google appears to be trying to clean up the look of the results page, which has gotten pretty cluttered over the years as they add more and more types of information and snippets. But the new design is too sparse. And the colors are too soft. It looks like Bing on a bad day.

The weirdest thing about the test is that it actually gives you much less information on the screen. This will require users to do more scrolling and paging through results to find what they?re looking for.

You?ll also notice that main result links are no longer underlined. And each result is separated by dotted lines (though there appears to be a version without the lines too).

Undoubtedly, this is just a bucket test (which Google likes to do quite often), as not all users are seeing this. But this is clearly a big test judging from the number of tips we?re getting and the tweets.

We knew Google was really interested in white space ? just not this much.

Lotus ^[1] team principal Tony Fernandes says he wants to use his company?s takeover of Caterham to make affordable sports cars using F1 technology.

Fernandes said Caterham will benefit from increased exposure through Formula 1.

Speaking at the announcement of the deal at the Duxford aviation museum Fernandes said Lotus will ?make Formula 1 accessible through Caterham?.

He said: ?There will be lots of different types of racing we?ll be doing to allow our fans and Caterham fans to have an experience.

?We?ll obviously be using the technology that Mike [Gascoyne] and his team have got to put into Caterham cars. We will have some new models.?

He added: ?My aim would be, at some stage, to have a common brand. I think that both have their aspirations.

?As to the way, shape and form some will be dependent on the legal case, some will depend on how it looks and feels, and I?ll take the view of the fans as well.

?So it?s all to play. But at least we?ve got something to play with, which is the objective. As to the eventual shape and form of this team, I don?t know to be honest.?

Fernandes said developing road cars was always part of the team?s plans:

?When we started this Formula 1 journey we always wanted to manufacture cars. We always thought Formula 1 produced a fantastic platform to do that.

?Unfortunately the gods conspired against us. Obviously we wanted to work with Group Lotus but that hasn?t happened.

?But it?s funny how life has a way of sorting itself out and things end up even better than what you first imagined.?

He added that Caterham ?has a unique place at the heart of motoring world.?

Fernandes said: ?The parallels between my original life at Air Asia, where we set up a new brand, and what we have with Caterham is uncanny. When I took over Air Asia they had 200 staff, there are about 200 staff in Caterham.

?The parallels of building something that will be reaching a much larger market is something we?re very excited about.?

In EW's cover story, Rob and Kristen discussed the exotic locations for the film. Much of the vampire honeymoon was shot outside the Brazilian town of Paraty.

"There's just this incredibly sensual vibe down there," reveals Condon.

While Jacob, the werewolf played by Taylor Lautner doesn't get the girl, he does manage to get over her, and in doing so "becomes a man," says Condon.

At least he gets to ride a cool motorcycle and run around soaking wet in the rain. Sadly, girls, he's got a shirt on, but you'll still enjoy the images below.

The Lawyer Who Sued CBS For Piracy Explains His Thinking

The topic of piracy engenders much passion these days. There are those who argue until their throats are hoarse that copyright laws need to be firm and punishing, just as others shout on mountaintops that copyright holders have gone too far.?What about those who supply megaphones to both camps?

Earlier in the week, we reported about a lawsuit against CBS Interactive for playing a role in the rise of the P2P era by distributing file-sharing software on subsidiary CNET. The headline character in this dispute is Alki David, an eccentric billionaire and Hollywood bit player, who seems to have spearheaded the legal effort as part of a revenge campaign. But just as intriguing in our eyes is the attorney, Michael Zeller, who agreed to take the case and has some fairly provocative views on the subject of copyright.

Zeller won't like the idea that we deem his viewpoint to be "provocative." We talked to him on the phone after the news of the lawsuit broke. He shrugged off our suggestion that he's dancing on a tightrope for this case and blanched at the notion that the case could set precedent. "I hope not," he says.

Zeller is a partner at Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan, which was named last year as the top intellectual property firm in the United States by IP Law & Business magazine. Zeller has a top-notch client list, including Google, eBay, IBM, Disney, and Mattel. He's been on both sides of copyright battles, for both plaintiffs and defendants, and as such, there have been times when he's argued for expanding copyright infringement liability and times when he's argued otherwise.?

As we pointed out in our original story about the lawsuit, Zeller once represented Time Warner in defense of a lawsuit a decade ago for knowingly disseminating P2P client,?Gnutella. Now, he's going against CBS for, among other things,?knowingly disseminating P2P client LimeWire.

In short, he's a lawyer's lawyer.

As one might expect, Zeller is very careful about keeping some sort of ideological consistency. Lest someone track down some prior brief he's written that espouses some contradictory viewpoint, Zeller needs to be on his toes. Plus, he's got to keep his clients happy. Google might not like a judgment that places more legal responsibilities on Internet Service Providers. (He'll never publicly admit that these things influence his job.)

Zeller believes that to a degree, ISPs should have fairly wide birth when it comes to their liability.

"Creating and disseminating technology used for copyright infringement is not enough," he says. "Even if CNET created LimeWire and made it available and knew what everyone was doing, that wouldn't be enough."

We're sure that Hollywood studios would disagree with that statement. But everyone who believes copyright holders are going too far (many of whom are attacking his latest lawsuit as silly) will say, "Right on!"

But then again, Zeller posits a theory that goes beyond any we've heard from the most zealous copyright holders. He says that where CBS crossed the line was in the way it was guiding users to infringe. For instance, the complaint mentions the praising review?that a CNET author gave LimeWire, likening it to a post-Napster clone.?"The instruction factor was most important here," says Zeller.

Sounds like Zeller is tracking close to saying that speech itself can be an inducement towards infringement, in a similar way that the U.S. government once tried to shut down a magazine from printing the secrets of the H-Bomb for fear it would be educational to terrorists. Does this mean that we, at THR, are liable for copyright infringement if we publish stories that offer some cursory road maps to how users can get pirated content?

In Zeller's view, the difference was that CNET was directly and knowingly profiting from its guidance, and he expects discovery in the case to be focused on the relationship between CBS Interactive and a company like LimeWire. The "partnership" aspect between an ISP and an institutional user/sponsor/whatever of the software platform is just one of the intriguing bits in this lawsuit.?

So too is the fact that the complaint didn't actually list any copyrighted material that was allegedly infringed. The lawsuit details who was damaged, including Alki David (as a film producer) and a bunch of rap artists, but unlike so many other lawsuits, this one doesn't show?what was stolen.

This was intentional on Zeller's part. He says it's not a requirement to list out infringements in complaints and expresses some fatigue at the "time consuming" chore of having to always amend complaints whenever new copyrighted material turns up during the course of proceedings as having been infringed. It's much simpler to just leave it out. It'll reveal itself later. That way,?the ground beneath his feet doesn't shift.

Does A Higher Minimum Wage Kill Jobs?

As the days grow warmer, employers who run roller coasters, water parks and hot dog stands are preparing for the summer season. They're seeking workers to fill jobs at or just above the federal minimum wage of $7.25 an hour.

Labor advocates say it's time for those workers to get a raise. They noted that when the minimum wage was last increased in July 2009, the cost of gasoline was about $2.50 a gallon. This summer, the pump price may well be twice that in many locations. Workers will also be spending more for their lunches because of higher food prices.

But the political outlook for a cost-of-living raise is bleak this year. With Republicans in control of the U.S. House, labor advocates are not expecting Congress to act.

States Wary Of Raising Minimum Wages

Instead, they have been focusing their lobbying efforts on state legislatures. Seventeen states and the District of Columbia have minimum wages set higher than the federal level. For example, in Oregon the wage is now $8.50 an hour.

Minimum wage supporters are hoping to prompt at least a few states to act. In Illinois, for example, some lawmakers have been pushing to raise the state minimum wage up to $10.65 in steps over four years. So far, they have not been successful. In fact, no state has voted to increase the minimum wage this year.

The problem is that with the unemployment rate still at 8.8 percent, elected officials don't want to do anything that might discourage job creation, especially for low-wage workers.

Business groups say a wage increase at this time would be a blow to workers because it would only discourage job creation. Government-mandated wage hikes "cause restaurant operators to make very difficult decisions to eliminate jobs, cut staff hours or increase prices," according to the National Restaurant Association, a trade group.

The Rise (Or Fall) Of The Minimum Wage

The federal minimum wage was last raised in 2009, to $7.25 an hour. In 1971, the minimum wage was $1.60. Adjusted for inflation, a worker today would have to make $8.83 an hour to have the same buying power, according to the Labor Department.

You Have To Have Money To Spend It

Labor advocates insist that thinking is wrong-headed. They argue that unless more workers get pay raises this year, a lot of families won't have money to spend. And, they say, that's exactly what the U.S. economy needs ? more consumer confidence and more spending. To stimulate the economy, lawmakers should insist that employers put more money into workers' wallets, the argument goes.

Political polls consistently show broad support for that viewpoint. "The average person knows the cost of things is going up," says Jen Kern, minimum wage campaign coordinator for the National Employment Law Project. "This is a critical part of recovery ? to help people have more money to spend."

Economists have been debating which of those competing views is correct ever since the federal minimum wage was first enacted in 1938. Some studies show raising the wage reduces the number of jobs, while others show that a modestly higher wage can stimulate spending without costing jobs.

In any case, while the debate continues in the United States, officials in other countries, especially in Asia, have come to a conclusion: Low-wage jobs need to pay more to head off social unrest. Workers are becoming angrier about this year's rising food and fuel prices. In China, Indonesia, Mongolia, Malaysia, Vietnam and Cambodia, the governments are in the process of introducing or toughening their minimum wage laws. In Hong Kong, for example, the government is imposing a minimum wage for the first time on May 1 ? just in time for International Workers' Day.

For her part, Deng, a Chinese national, recently helped IDG China Media complete star Zhang Ziyi?s latest English-language film, Snow Flower and the Secret Fan, by director Wayne Wang. While Wall St. may be patting themselves on the back as NAR?s existing home sales report beat expectations by 2% or 100K home sales, assuring everybody that a housing recovery is now imminent, the truth is, the data points to a significant and negative trend in home prices.

For now the fourth month in a row, NAR?s data is showing year over year price declines in housing with each month showing a larger?deterioration than the previous.? In fact, this latest report reveals?the largest year over year decline (-5.9%)?since October of 2009 (-7.6%).

The median home value now stands at $159,600.

The percentage of homes with negative equity continues to grow?despite the most accomodative monetary policy in world history.

If home values are still falling now?despite the Fed?s best, albeit academic,?efforts to prop up the housing market, it is not too difficult to imagine how swift the collapse in?home prices will be when the Fed?is no longer able to manipulate long term rates and the free markets are finally able to unleash their wrath on Bernanke?s sins.?

This latest disapointment on housing is merely the culmination of several previous housing indicators that were all pointing to an anemic Spring buying season for real estate.

There is no housing or economic recovery.? There is only the?coverup before the next crisis.

Loris Capirossi has topped the third session of free practice at the Estoril circuit, and the fact that the man who has so far struggled to tame the Pramac Ducati was the fastest in the session was a sign of how mixed the conditions were. The track slowly dried out throughout the course or practice, but large sections remained slick, with damp patches throughout. Most of the riders chose to remain in the pits for much of the session, with only a few circulating on track.

At the end of the session, it was Loris Capirossi who posted the fastest time, half a second ahead of Jorge Lorenzo, who was in turn faster than the Marlboro Ducatis of Nicky Hayden and Valentino Rossi. Clouds are hanging in the hills to the northwest of the circuit, and there would seem to be a very good chance of rain during qualifying.

In the major sports, stories about athletes' salaries generally draw derision and jealous reactions. In the case of mixed martial arts, fans probably have a more supportive stance for the fighters. The combatants aren't making a killing relative to athletes from the NFL, NBA and MLB yet they're putting their safety on the line.

According to ESPN the Magazine, the highest paid MMA fighter in 2010 was Lesnar at ONLY $5.3 million. Boxer Manny Pacquiao led the way in the other major combat sport at $32 million.

On the surface, that makes MMA look pathetic. Should MMA stars like Lesnar, Georges St-Pierre and Anderson Silva be making $15 million-plus a year? Maybe, but the argument from MMA promoters is that the gap between boxing's haves and have-nots is massive while MMA can boast of dozens of fighters making in excess of $500,000 per year.

The StarPhoenix's Dave Deibert points out that Lesnar is actually a bigger draw than 99.9 percent of the fighters in the modern history of combat sports:

Lesnar has recently become the biggest pay-per-view draw in the world. In 2010, he joined Mike Tyson as the only athletes to twice draw more than one million buys on pay-per-view in a single year ? Tyson did it three times in 1996.

no further than _Time_ magazine's current issue featuring their latest draft
picks of the World's Most 100 Influential People. If climate change is, as Al
Gore (and legions of others) claims, the greatest threat facing mankind

the UN's climate circus? No Amory Lovins? No Bill McKibben, or any other
carbon crusader?

The only environmental figure who turns up on the list is EPA administrator

_Time_ magazine lists like this are easy to mock for their dreary and

Apple has a tablet. So does RIM. HP Palm too, soon enough. And Android tablets, particularly those running Honeycomb... they're everywhere -- hell, even Sony has a few on the way. That leaves Nokia as the glaring anomaly conspicuously absent from the tablet wars. Understandable, we guess, given the company's urgent need to transition its smartphone strategy to Windows Phone. That doesn't mean the company is standing still though. According to an interview with YLE television in Finland, Nokia CEO Stephen Elop is taking a very calculated approach to tablets, saying, "We could take advantage of Microsoft technology and software, and build a Windows-oriented tablet, or we could do things with some of the other software assets that we have. Our team right now is assessing what's the right tablet strategy for Nokia." In other words, Nokia is investigating tablets running Windows 7 (doubtful), MeeGo (doubtful), and Windows Next, aka that tablet-friendly Windows 8 OS (likely). But here's the most illuminating exchange from the well-mannered Canadian:

There are now over 200 different tablets on the marketplace, only one of them is doing really well. And, my challenge to the team is I don't wanna be the 201st tablet on the market that you can't tell from all of the others. We have to take a uniquely Nokia prospective and so the teams are working very hard on something that would be differentiating relative to everything else that's going on in the market.

Q. So you're not in a hurry?

We're always in a hurry to do the right things, but we're mostly in a hurry to do the right thing.

Makes sense to us and echoes what we've heard about Sony's relatively delayed entry into consumer tablets. Why should Nokia build another me-too tablet when it can tap into the combined Microsoft / Nokia ecosystem and make a grab at some real market share and profit? Osama Bin Laden's Death A 'Poignant Moment For America,' Students Say

Every generation has signature moments that will never be forgotten. For the current crop of students at New York University, the killing of al Qaeda mastermind Osama bin Laden by U.S. special forces presented a bookmark to the first event that shaped their lives, the September 11 terror attacks.

"I think that 50 years from now, I will remember that I was in the NYU newsroom when that news broke," Katie Thompson, 19, deputy managing editor of the NYU News, said about where she was when she saw President Obama announce that the terror leader had been killed.

"When I was listening to President Obama's speech, I personally teared up a little bit. I think it was a very poignant moment for America. We've had this baggage of 9/11 for so long. This is a big step forward for us in the war on terror. This will be a seminal moment in American history following those attacks and President Obama's election."

As soon as President Obama finished addressing the nation Sunday night, Massachusetts native Thompson knew she would have to rip up the front page she had planned for Monday morning and hit the streets to get reaction. She first went to New York's Union Square around midnight, where she found a split reaction to the news, and then to Ground Zero, where there was also some joy mixed with trepidation.

"We found from the students we talked to at both locations that there was a bit of a mixed reaction," the journalism major said. "There were a lot of students who were ... I would say jubilant was the overall mood at Ground Zero. There was a lot of American pride, people chanting ... people who thought that Osama bin Laden deserved to die for what he did and happy that America had finally taken care of him."

But there were also students who were concerned that the types of celebrations that were taking place at Ground Zero and the celebratory mood were not appropriate and might perpetuate the cycle of violence. "That taking the life of this one man didn't necessarily make up for the lives that were lost in the wars in the Middle East and the September 11 attacks," she said of the response. "Especially for NYU students who know people who were affected or have loved ones who were either wounded or passed away in the attacks that us killing bin Laden is never going to bring those loved ones back. And that was a big concern for some students."

The excitement at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia was similar, but with finals looming, it provided not just an excellent reason to take a study break, but a major tension reliever for a campus that goes into virtual hibernation when the end of studies approach.

Lauren Plotnick, 20, executive editor of The Daily Pennsylvanian, happened to be in the paper's offices on Sunday night studying when a friend told her about a Twitter alert in advance of the president's speech. Though the paper has ceased its print edition for the year already, the enormity of the moment quickly dawned on Plotnick and she scrambled to coordinate coverage.

"People are deep in finals and it's difficult to get them covering stuff when we're no longer publishing a print edition," said Plotnick, an econ major from Maryland. She sent out an email to the entire staff and asked to them to start gathering student reaction and send in whatever they got: videos, interviews or tweets.

"The social-media presence just ignited," she said. "We were using Twitter and Facebook to fan out the preliminary reactions ... people were saying how exciting it was for America and how exciting it was they were finding out more through social media than through television."

Even with finals looming, Plotnick said work stopped at the on-campus libraries, students gathered around televisions and laptops and started cheering, and for a little while, it seemed as if everyone in every house and public gathering spot stopped what they were doing to watch the news unfolding.

"On this campus, to see everyone reacting in such an excited way was really remarkable for us," she said. "It really unified the campus and got everyone excited." While she called it one of the most thrilling moments she can remember in her 20 years, she noted that one student who was interviewed said their father is an architect working on the plans for the Freedom Tower in New York and they were scared about him going to work on Monday.

Similarly, living and studying just a few subway stops from Ground Zero in New York, Thompson said a number of students expressed fear of retaliation and concern the city might be a target again. But, in the scheme of news she's covered and experienced in her life, Thompson put Sunday night's events up there with the night of Obama's inauguration as one of the seminal news moments for this generation. She also described how everything in the paper's newsroom stopped the moment it was announced that the president would address the nation.

"We all just gathered around a laptop. ... We didn't know what he was going to address the nation about, and then the news started leaking. ... We knew our whole front page was going to be scrapped and this was that moment," she said.

Plotnick said many of the students who offered their responses also called this one of those moments in life where you will always remember where you were. "For me, it has a whole other dimension. The idea of being in the newsroom and working for a newspaper when events like this occur and having the responsibility to the student body ... it's so special and it transcends time," she said, noting the paper's 126-year history of covering everything from WWI and WWII to the Kennedy assassination and 9/11. "It was really exciting to be in the newsroom and be part of that experience. It felt like a continuation of the role of newspapers and of modern media."

Still left to be cast are the tributes from District 2, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10, along with pivotal characters including Haymitch and Cinna.

Emerson (Father of the Pride) is repped by Susan Nathe & Associates.

The film, to be directed by Gary Ross, will be in theaters March 23, 2012.

In our times, internet and technology make the idea of how to make money online very charming to almost all people. So when greed in making money but also in life is bad? Greed can be lethal, self-destructive for the main reason the original Wall Street movie was a huge success, a classic film. The reason is human element and human psychology, the human nature is unpredictable. And envy or jealousy is very bad because it is not productive.

In the stock market when there is a strong trend that lasts months or years many people believe that if newbies in investing can achieve it, anyone can too. This is the only thing that is bad about greed, not being able to see that you are out of reality, that you are dealing with something unknown to your abilities or your personality. Your mental attitude changes, your priorities change, your passions change and your life too. In the second film Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps, the director Oliver Stone in the extras of the film included in DVD format mentions something very challenging. How much money is ever enough to us? Some millions, some thousands, 2 or 3 houses, some billions?

The pursue of financial freedom is not bad. The concept of trying to get rich is not unacceptable by our society or global economy. The contrary, greed is not only good, greed can be productive and a good thing. it can steer crucial changes as long it does not work solely to fulfill our egos. Because in a world where millionaires or billionaires would exist in abundance global issues like poverty, lack of proper nutrition or poor water conditions and inadequate education might not exist as excess money would solve many of these problems. Of course you cannot create money out of nothing as this is the definition of a financial bubble. But we showed that greed is good in making money as long you do not get obsessed and lose meaning of everyday life and what really matters. Most people who try to build a fortune and create wealth may find that greed is not bad, it is the main power to make their dreams come true.

Capitalism as business concept is based on greed, competition, self-esteem.

"Well," I said, "I will try. I honestly will try to be honest with you, although I suppose really what you're more interested in is my not being honest, if you see what I mean."

The doctor smiled slightly.

"When I was a child my mother had a wool drawer. It was the bottom drawer in a chest in the dining room and she kept every scrap of wool she had in it. You know, bits from years ago, jumpers she'd knitted me when I was two. Some of the bits were only a few inches long. Well, this drawer was filled with wool, all colours, and whenever it was a wet afternoon she used to make me tidy her wool drawer. It's perfectly obvious why I tell you this. There was no point in tidying the drawer. The wool was quite useless. You couldn't have knitted a tea-cosy out of that wool, I mean without enormous patience. She just made me sort it out for something to do, like they make prisoners dig holes and fill them up again. You do see what I mean, don't you?"

"You would like to be something useful," he said sadly. "Like a tea-cosy."

"It can't be as easy as that."

"Oh no. It's not at all easy. But there are other things you can make from wool."

"Such as?"

"Hot water bottle covers," he said promptly.

"We don't use hot water bottles. Balls you can make, for babies. Or small golliwogs."

"The point you are trying to make is that tidying the wool is a useless and probably impossible task?"

"Yes."

"But you are a human being. The consequences of your ...muddle are more grave. The comparison, you see, is not a true one."

"Well, it's how it feels to me," I said.

"When you cry, is that how it feels? Hopeless?"

"I just want to open my mouth and cry. I want to cry, and not think."

"But you can't cry for the rest of your life."

"No."

"You can't worry for the rest of your life."

"No."

"What do you worry about, Mrs. Armitage?"

"Dust," I said.

"I'm sorry?"

"Dust. You know? Dust."

"Oh," he said, and wrote for a while on a long piece of paper. Then he sat back, folded his hands and said, "Tell me about it."

"It's very simple. Jake is rich. He makes about ?50,000 a year, I suppose you'd call that rich. But everything is covered with dust."

"Please go on."

"It's partly the demolition, of course. They're pulling down the houses all round us, so you have to expect a bit of dust. My father bought the lease of the hosue for us when we got married, that was thirteen years ago."
"You have been married for thirteen years," he said, writing it down.

"To Jake, yes. There were thirteen years of the lease to run when my father bought it. He bought it for ?1,500 and we pay a peppercorn rent, so you see we're very lucky. Anyway. I was trying to tell you about the dust."

"So your lease expires this year."

"I suppose so. We're building a tower in the country at the moment."

"A tower?"
"Yes."

"You mean ... a house?"

"No. A tower. Well, I suppose you could call it a house. It's a tower, though."

He put his pen down carefully, with both hands, as though it were fragile. "And where is this ... tower?" he asked.

"In the country," I said.

"I realize that, but ? "

"It's on a hill, and down in the valley is a barn, where I used to live before I married Jake. That's where we met. Now can we get back to the dust, because ... "

"Of course," he said, and picked up his pen again.
I tried to think. I stared at him, silhouetted against the net-curtained window of the consulting room. I heard the tick of the clock, the hiss of the gas fire. "I've forgotten what I was going to say."

He waited. The clock ticked. I stared at the fire.

"Jake doesn't want any more children," I said.

"Do you like children, Mrs. Armitage?"
"How can I answer such a question?"

"Could it be a question that you don't wish to answer?"
"I thought I was supposed to lie on a couch and you wouldn't say a word. It's like the inquisition or something. Are you trying to make me feel I'm wrong? Because I do that for myself."

"Do you think it would be wrong not to like children?"
"I don't know. Yes. Yes, I think so."
"Why?"
"Because children don't do you any harm."

"Not directly, perhaps. But indirectly..."

"Perhaps you don't have any, I said.

"Oh, yes. Three. Two boys and a girl."

"How old are they?"

"Sixteen, fourteen and ten."

"And do you like them?"

"Most of the time."

"Well, then. That's my answer I like them most of the time."

"But you have ... " He glanced at his list and made do with, "a remarkable number. You seem upset that your husband doesn't want any more. This hardly sounds like someone who likes children most of the time. It sounds more of ... "

"An obsession?"

"I wouldn't use that word. Conviction, perhaps, would be nearer the mark."

"I thought I was meant to lie on a couch and talk about whatever came into my head."

"I'm not an analyst, Mrs. Armitage. I simply want to find out how you should be treated."

"Treated for what?"

"We don't know yet, do we?"

"For wanting another child? Is that why Jake made me come to you? Does he want you to persuade me not to have another child?"

"I am not here to persuade you of anything. You came of your own free will."

"In that case I do everything of my own free will. Crying, worrying about the dust. Even having children. But you don't believe that, do you?"

"I'm not here to believe you, Mrs. Armitage. That isn't the point."
"You keep saying you're not here to do this, that and the other. What are you here for?"

"Perhaps," he gave another of his wan smiles, "to find out why you hate me so much, at the moment. Oh, I don't mean myself, personally, of course. But you hate something, don't you ... other than dust?"

VCs and IT Security Firms: Not Much Love in the Air

Security is a top concern for both public and private sector operations. However, when it comes to funding small IT security companies, VCs are apparently reluctant to fork out cash. Mergers and acquisitions in the IT security space are outpacing initial public offerings by small, new IT security firms.

Although security breaches make the headlines regularly and Washington has plans to upgrade the security of the United States' national infrastructure, up-and-coming IT security companies are having difficulty securing investment funds.

The U.S. Defense Department plans to spend US$500 million on researching new cybersecurity technologies, and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security is putting up $40 million to encourage research and development in the field.

However, when it comes to funding small IT security companies, VCs are apparently reluctant to fork out cash.

"It seems there's been a general shift among venture capitalists away from security," Jim Pflaging, director and managing principal at SINET, stated at a private lunch at the 2011 IT Security Entrepreneurs' Forum (ITSEF), held in Palo Alto recently.

Small Returns Hamper IT Security Investors

The problem is that large returns are not common in the security business.

"In any space there are some large outcomes, and that's true for security as well, but you're not going to see tons and tons of them," Asheem Chandna, a partner at Greylock Partners, stated at the ITSEF lunch.

The vast majority of the 950 companies in the security industry in the United States are capitalized under US$5 million, and there are probably "fewer than 5 or 10 percent of them that are above $50 million," said Maria Kussmaul, a founding partner at America's Growth Capital. That $5 million capitalization "is the appropriate bite size for investment," she added.

Venture capitalists are putting their money in other areas such as social networking, mobile and green technology because they can get a higher possible rate of return, SINET's Pflaging told TechNewsWorld.

Also, venture capitalists think the IT security market has been overinvested. As proof, they point to fewer homeruns and the fact that many IT security firms plateau at $20 million to $30 million, Pflaging added.

"IT security issues are hard to solve," Robert R. Ackerman, managing director and founder of Allegis Capital, told TechNewsWorld. "The issues of market timing and technical complexity have combined to serve as barriers to a massive influx of capital in IT security," he said.

Cannibalizing the IT Security Sector

Mergers and acquisitions in the IT security space are outpacing initial public offerings (IPOs) by small, new IT security firms, Kussmaul said.

"In the last couple of years, we only had one security company that went public -- Arcsight," Kussmaul added. "We're losing security companies faster than we're repopulating them, which means we're having the most centralized consolidation around the companies that remain active," she added.

M&A activity is strong in the IT security business. The larger IT security companies are snapping up the smaller ones, and outside players are also getting into the act.

"Platform companies, storage companies, other security companies -- they're all getting involved [in buying up IT security companies]," Kussmaul said.

"To me, the bigger issue, which hasn't been well-discussed, is the trend towards more security M&A from the system integrator community, especially those SI companies with a government focus," SINET's Pflaging stated. Large IT manufacturers such as HP (NYSE: HPQ), IBM (NYSE: IBM), Cisco (Nasdaq: CSCO) and Dell (Nasdaq: DELL) will battle their former government channel partners such as SAIC and Raytheon to provide IT security to the government sector, he said.

Possible Areas for Future Investment

Things may be changing for the better.

"As someone who sits as a trusted advisor to many in the security space, I can say that the M&A activity in 2010 and a greater awareness of the importance of cybersecurity at the national level has created more interest in finding the next generation of breakout security companies," Pflaging remarked.

Investment in security technology is beginning to grow because of a combination of major platform shifts, the increasingly sophisticated threat landscape, and increased regulatory compliance being demanded by governments, J. Alberto Yepez, managing director at Trident Capital, told TechNewsWorld.

"VCs are beginning to move aggressively to invest in the sector given the high-profile cases of intellectual property theft such as the RSA hack and Aurora, cyber attacks such as Stuxnet, identity theft such as those that hit Heartland Payments and TJ Maxx, and cyberwarfare such as the Georgia conflict," Yepez stated.

There are four major platform shifts all occurring concurrently now, Yepez postulated. These are virtualization, the cloud, mobility and the consumerization of the enterprise, both through consumers bringing their own devices to work and the intrusion of social networks into the corporation.

VCs should look at the white spaces -- where nobody's offering adequate security yet -- as opportunities to invest profitably in IT security, Allegis Capital's Ackerman suggested.

"Cloud computing is certainly an area of significant interest," Ackerman said.

Lindsay Lohan received some slightly good news today: Her original felony charge stemming from the alleged theft of a $2,500 necklace back in January was reduced to a misdemeanor. The problem-plagued actress will still have to stand trial, as Judge Stephanie Sautner ruled that the theft was in violation of Lohan's probation.

According to TMZ, the reduced charge indicates that Lohan might not face jail time; the punishment will be determined after the verdict in the trial.

The Associated Press reports that, in reducing the charge, Sautner said she was giving the actress "an opportunity." The misdemeanor still has a potential penalty of a year in jail.

Late last month, Lohan turned down a plea deal offered by the Los Angeles County District Attorney's office after being told by Judge Keith Schwartz that had she accepted the DA's deal — reportedly six months of jail time — she would have been found in violation of her probation and could serve more time.

Lohan allegedly lifted a $2,500 necklace from a Venice, California, jewelry store on January 22. The owner reported the theft to the Los Angeles Police Department, which later investigated the accusation and presented evidence to the District Attorney's office. Up until Judge Sautner's ruling, the actress had been officially charged with one count of felony grand theft and faced up to three years in prison.

Lohan's trial date was set for June 3 and a pretrial date for May 11. Lohan must be present at both hearings.

The economic difficulties of the past two years have left an indelible impression on consumers? food decisions, driving several of the Top 10 food trends identified in the April 2011 issue of Food Technology magazine, published by the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT).

Data gathered from a variety of sources (listed below) finds that although there were signs of improvement last year in the consumer food products industry, lingering issues such as high grocery and gasoline prices, job insecurity and the risk of inflation are limiting what consumers will spend. On the upside, this conservative attitude is leading to more meals prepared and eaten at home, rejuvenating that segment of the industry.

The Top 10 trends identified for 2011 are:

1. Demographically Directed. There is a dramatic difference in food preferences, eating styles and behaviors from the oldest consumers to the youngest. For example, those older than 50 are the last generation to be raised on European-influenced meals made from scratch and served three times a day. In contrast, the NPD Group predicts that Gen Yers will drive consumption of salty/savory snacks, easy meals, center-of-the-plate proteins, sweet snacks/desserts, and heat-and-eat breakfasts (NPD 2009).

2. Still Cooking. Last year, more than half (55 percent) of grocery shoppers prepared more meals at home than in 2009, approaching a 20-year high (FMI 2010). That trend is expected to continue, but shoppers say they want some help in making their meals, such as simple instructions, pop-up timers and serving suggestions.

3. The Appeal of Americana. Americana, characterized by factors ranging from local and farm-raised foods to American regional cuisines, will be among the most prominent food industry trends over the next decade. According to 2009 research by GfK Roper, two-thirds (67 percent) of adults say they really enjoy American food. The FoodService Research Institute?s MenuMine? database, which tracks 12 American regional cuisines, reports Southern, American seaboard and American barbecue lead U.S. cuisines on restaurant menus in 2011. This opens up many possibilities for traditional comfort foods, such as chili, fried chicken, pot roast and macaroni and cheese.

4. Foodie Focused. Two-thirds of consumers consider themselves knowledgeable and interested in food, with young adults ages 25-34 most likely to be foodies. Research shows the specialty food market experienced marked success in 2010, with 63 percent of adults buying gourmet foods, up from just 46 percent in 2009 (Tanner 2010a).

5. Get Real. Consumers are increasingly concerned about contents of the food in their diets, believing that limiting them is a component of healthy eating. Research finds half of consumers deliberately avoid preservatives, almost half (47 percent) avoid artificial flavors, and 43 percent avoid colors (Hartman 2010a). Natural ingredients rank third on the list of most looked-for items on the ingredient label, after type of fat/oil and sweeteners (IFIC 2010).

6. The New Nutrients. Consumers are shifting away from getting nutrients via fortified foods and turning toward products that are naturally high in vitamins/minerals and those that have been blended with other foods to create even higher nutrient levels. Whole grain was the most sought-after health claim on packages in 2010, followed by high fiber, low sodium, low fat, no trans fat, low sugar, low calorie, no chemical additives, no preservatives and low/lowers cholesterol (FMI 2010).

7. Specialty Treats. Despite the trend toward nutrient-rich foods, consumers are still demanding specialty treats. Chocolate candy, creamers, cookies and wine are among the fastest-growing categories in food, drug and mass merchandisers (excluding Wal-Mart). The popularity of baking at home is surging because of the economy and high-end baking shows on television, but with only 41 percent of meal preparers describing themselves as experienced bakers, bread/bakery mixes and decorative toppings are enjoying brisk sales (MSI 2009b). Expect to see more restaurant-style gourmet and decadent mixes on store shelves.

8. Three Squares. Research shows the number of adults eating three meals a day increased 6 percent during the past two years, with breakfast being the biggest beneficiary of that trend (MSI 2010b). In 2010, consumers ate breakfast 5.3 days per week, and 55 percent never skipped the morning meal (FMI, 2010). Three-quarters (74 percent) of breakfast eaters ate at home, up 8 percent from two years ago (MSI 2010c). When it comes to lunch, workers are packing their brown bags. More than half (58 percent) of full-time workers brought a lunch from home in 2010, up from 28 percent in 2007 (FMI 2010).

9. Prescriptive Eating. Consumers are very concerned about risk factors for disease, and they are turning to functional foods to aid in their health goals. Research finds 68 percent of baby boomers were concerned about cholesterol and 66 percent were concerned about blood pressure; among Gen Y consumers, 40 percent were concerned about cholesterol and blood pressure (Hartman 2010a). Data from Mintel suggests weight control and cholesterol-lowering lead the list of most desired functional food benefits, followed by digestion and immunity (Mintel 2009a).

10. Home Rituals. The difficult economy forced consumers to alter their everyday eating practices, and many of those changes remain in place three years later. For example, 71 percent of consumers have brought snacks from home to movies and sporting events (IRI, 2010e), and 78 percent of all snacking now takes place in the home (Stachura 2011). In addition, home entertaining has become a new way of life, with 67 percent of consumers spending more time at home with their family, and 44 percent entertaining family/friends at home instead of going out in 2010 (IRI 2010d).

How Does the Green Angry Bird Work?

Who doesn?t love Angry Birds? Well, according to The Oatmeal, the green angry bird is the least likable. Here is how the green bird is described (click through to read the full comic ? it is pretty funny)

Ok, let me assume you don?t know about the green angry bird. Basically, when you throw it, it goes like any other bird. However, when you tap it the bird changes its motion in a way that it usually comes back somewhat. I like to call it the boomerang bird, but it isn?t actually a boomerang.

How does this thing work? What is its motion like after it is tapped? Does it have a constant acceleration? Does the post-tap acceleration depend on when it was tapped? To explore these questions, I made some videos of the green bird in action. The trajectory of the bird can be determined using Tracker Video analysis. On to the physics.

Perhaps I should point out something important and useful. From my previous analysis, I found that the height of the big sling shot was 4.9 meters. I will need that.

Here is my first plot. This shows vertical position vs. time. It includes a fit to the part of the motion before the tap. Note that the green bird went off screen for a short bit.

This shows an acceleration of around 10 m/s². Close enough for me (there did seem to be excessive zooming for this shot ? that makes things a little bit more challenging). Now, what about the motion after the tap?

This looks like a fairly constant vertical velocity after the tap. In this case, the y-velocity seems to be -11 m/s. In the x-direction, the green bird seems to have a constant velocity before the tap (in this case, about 16.9 m/s). Maybe there is now a constant horizontal acceleration after the tap. This quadratic equation seems to sort of fit.

This would give a horizontal acceleration of -32.8 m/². I think I need to look at some more trials. For this next ?throw?, the bird once again has a constant y-velocity after the tap (-8.65 m/s). In the x-direction, the bird has a velocity of 23.7 m/s before the tap. Here is a fit after the tap.

This looks like a constant acceleration of 54.4 m/s². Ok, here is my guess. After the tap, the green bird has zero acceleration in the y-direction and the x-direction has an acceleration of ? 2*v_x that the bird had before the tap. This seems to work for these two runs, but I should look at some more runs.

Let me go ahead and admit that collected data on this dumb is not trivial. First, the zooming of the screen is a pain in the rear. You can ?zoom out? before you shoot the bird (and I don?t mean ?shoot the bird?). However, if you download examples from online you can?t control the zoom. Also, it turns out that making a video of my iPod is not as easy as it sounds. It is a careful balance of getting the right distance and having the video camera on the right settings. Here is a collage of some of my shots. (oh, these were from Angry Birds Seasons ? Halloween)

From all this data, I collected:

Initial x and y-velocity.
The time after the launch that I tapped the bird (not sure if I will need it).
The x-acceleration of the bird in the time around the ?tap?.
The x and y-velocity of the bird a long time after the tap (because it seems constant).

Let me go ahead and point out something obvious. The motion of the green bird can be broken into three parts. First, there seems to be a pretty normal projectile motion phase (before the tap). Then, when you tap it, there is some x-acceleration. For example, just look at this plot of a typical green bird in motion.

From both of those, it looks like a constant velocity some time after the ?tap?.

So, what about the tap part? Here is the graph that took so long for me to create. This is a plot of the initial (pre-tap) x-velocity vs. the during the tap x-acceleration. Oh, this is for 10 different green bird shots (on the same level).

As you can see, the data seems a little rough. What helps a bunch is to have a ?backwards shot? green bird. For those two data points, the initial x-velocity is negative. This makes the fitting function seem to work. The fit linear fit for this data gives a slope of 2.3 s^-1 (yes, that is the correct units) with an intercept of 0.06 m/s^{2^{. Not too bad. So, if this model works, then during the tap, the x-acceleration is:}}

I am not too sure about the duration of this tap acceleration, but I have a way to find that out. Also, I am not too sure about the y-acceleration during this time. Is it still -9.8 m/s²? Or maybe it is 0 m/s². If I know the time of duration for the tap acceleration, I can find the y-acceleration. Here is the plan. First, I know v_x-1 v_x-3 (where the ?1? is for before the tap and 3 is after). From the definition of acceleration, I get:

If the time for the tap is constant, then I should be able to plot v_x1 vs. v_x3 ? v_x1 and it should be a straight line. Here is that plot.

The linear function that fits this data has a slope of -0.42 (let me say no units). According the relationship above, this would mean the slope is:

Note: I know the units look weird. That is because that ?2? actually has units with it. Remember that the acceleration was -2 times the velocity. So the ?2? must have units of 1/s. This gives the correct units for time of seconds. So, putting all this together I get a tap-time of 1.19 seconds. Well, I was hoping for some nice number like ?1?.

Now, back to the y-velocity and y-acceleration. Let me assume the change in motion in the y-direction takes the same amount of time as the x-direction. That is to say that the tap time is the same for both x and y. If this is the case, then I can use the tap time to find a_y:

Clearly, I should plot v_y1 vs. v_y2. If the acceleration is constant, then the slope of this plot should be 1 and the intercept will tell me something about the acceleration. Before I make this plot, I need to know the y-velocity right before the tap. I recored the initial y-velocity as well as the time the ?tap? took place. From this, I can find the velocity right before (which I will call v₂) with:

For this case, t is the time from the launch to the tap. Now, making the plot (with v_y2 instead of v_y1):

This doesn?t look very linear. I guess I will have to look at this with some better data. Ok, but that will be another post.

Testing the Model

Going back to the horizontal acceleration model. Here is a test. If my model works, then what should happen if I shoot the bird straight up with no x-velocity? Unfortunately, you can?t actually do this in Angry Birds since the sling shot gets in the way. You can sort of do it though. I am not going to tell you the answer to this question, you will have to try it out for yourself. Oh, also just so you know. I am going to have to also come up with a model of how to effectively use this angry green bird. Maybe then it won?t be so hated.

Summary

For the green bird, the motion consists of a projectile motion phase, a ?tap? phase, and a post-tap phase.
For the tap phase, it seems the horizontal acceleration has a value of twice the initial x-velocity (but in the opposite direction).
This tap acceleration lasts for about 1 second.
After the tap, the bird moves with a constant velocity (constant in both the x- and y-direction)
I am still uncertain of the y-acceleration during the tap.

Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke gives his first-ever regularly scheduled press conference Wednesday. It's an extraordinary move for an institution that has been historically less than transparent. By going before the media, Chairman Bernanke is hoping to bolster the public's confidence in the Fed and better explain its decision-making. But the event poses risks as well ? one wrong word could send the markets tumbling. Michele Norris talks with Donald Kohn, a former Federal Reserve vice chairman, about what we should expect.

Back in 1996, the markets got a painful indication of the power of the Fed chairman. This is famous moment when Alan Greenspan referred to irrational exuberance. Markets around the world panicked. One lesson is that the Fed chairman's words can have a seismic impact and, no doubt, the current Fed chairman Ben Bernanke is aware of that as he prepares to do something unprecedented tomorrow - the first-ever regularly scheduled press conference.

Now, this is a fixture of life in official Washington. But it's the first time a Fed chief has scheduled an event where he will take questions from reporters. And to talk about this, I'm joined now by Donald Kohn. He's a former Fed vice chairman who served under Chairman Bernanke and Alan Greenspan. Mr. Kohn, welcome to the program.

Mr. DONALD KOHN (Economist, Former Federal Reserve Vice Chairman): Thank you, Michele. It's a pleasure to be here.

NORRIS: So I'm wondering, when he walks into this room and faces these reports, does he have some sort of dossier of what he can and can't say? And I assume that no one will ever say irrational exuberance again.

(Soundbite of laughter)

Mr. KOHN: I doubt those words will pass his lips tomorrow. I think he'll have thought very clearly about what he wants to say and the message he wants to deliver. He'll have discussed that with the open market committee today and tomorrow during their meeting. He'll make sure that they are familiar and back up what he wants to say in his answers to questions and in any brief opening statement he might have.

NORRIS: Now, do I understand this correctly? I gather that you had some initial concerns about the Fed holding a press conference, but that you've over time changed your mind.

Mr. KOHN: In the past I was somewhat concerned about the chances that inadvertent mistakes would be made or people would misinterpret what a Fed chairman said in a press conference. As you noted, Michele, the chairman's words can have very powerful impacts on markets.

But over recent years, as the Federal Reserve has undertaken a series of very unusual and unprecedented steps to deal with the problems in the economy, I've come to feel that a press conference answering questions would stand the Federal Reserve in good stead. Whatever risk there was of a misinterpretation, the benefits would far outweigh the costs under these circumstances.

NORRIS: Mr. Kohn, I wonder if you're willing to take us behind the curtain a little bit. You note that the Fed chairman is going to be meeting with the Federal Open Markets Committee, but I'm wondering what else he's been doing to prepare for this. I'd read that he'd been involved in weeks of preparation. How do they prepare him for something like this?

Because as you know, there are these little exercises, in a city like this, where people actually stand in front of dummy committees, meeting stand-ins to help, you know, take incoming fire from the press corps.

Mr. KOHN: Right. And I'm sure that's happened in this case. Certainly, preparing a chairman for a congressional hearing was one in which the staff participated in firing questions at the chairman and evaluating his answers to make sure the effect he was having would be what he intended to have.

NORRIS: You know, as I listen to you, I have this image of someone holding a baseball bat standing in front of a pitching machine.

(Soundbite of laughter)

Mr. KOHN: Well, that might be appropriate for the chairman, who's a great baseball fan.

NORRIS: Good analogy, because I almost mentioned a tennis racket instead. But I guess...

Mr. KOHN: That would've been the previous chairman.

Which turns out to be more common than you'd think, among forty-something humans. Yea, we can hold it together in our thirties, with a raft of hair products and semi-tall nonfat half-caf beverages and much brisk walking to a lot of interesting appointments.

Come the forties, though, cracks begin to appear. One staggers suddenly along life's path; gourmet coffee splats; the wig slips askew.

In other words, my friends, THE WHEELS COME OFF. Whatever vehicle you were so confidently hurtling along in in Act One of your life, that sped you to age twenty-six, thirty-four, thirty-nine ... even forty-two? Yea, that buggy will skitter sideways into a ditch, flip over, burst into flames; firemen will have to use the Jaws of Life to get you out. And if you do not find another car to climb into, well ...

"Look at Anna Karenina!" I remember exhorting my female writing students at Marymount College, spreading my arms wide, and expansively. The Rebecca A. Mirman Chair of Creative Writing ? this was my Second Act, the sudden forgiving windfall of a plum teaching job, complete with a year's worth of truly excellent health insurance, and I played it to the hilt, never mind that I was sweating a lot. Even trying to figure out the faculty parking made me sweat. Anyway, I'd been trying to describe the difference between metaphor and metonymy, how Anna Karenina's little red handbag sitting by the side of the train tracks does not "symbolize" her but actually "is" her, which is to say it STANDS for her, in the manner of a linguistic SIGN ...

When all at once I heard myself veer off into a tangent about how depressed I am that over and over I read that novel, year after year, and things never turn out better for Anna. By my count, the last time Anna is happy is on page seventy-six out of a five-hundred-page tome. She peaks at the ball, where she dances with Count Vronsky ? and it's not even during the WHOLE ball ? it's not during the waltz, the gavotte, the schottische, or the fox-trot but in particular during . . . the MAZURKA.

That's how it was for women in those days, it was all about the MAZURKA ?

And then, inevitably, the MAZURKA ends and now come four hundred pages of falling action, of dragging tediously around Europe with Vronsky, consuming all those carbs together, putting on weight, particularly around the neck (with a potato-based diet, all the weight for those Russians would certainly fly to the neck). It's all about overpriced English baby prams and go-nowhere piazza remodeling projects in Italy (It is! Reread it! Feel free to skip the endless Levin/wheat farming parts, I always do), modern plots for women in the post?Jane Austen/Pride and Prejudice/Elizabeth Bennet era boiling down to just four words:

Indeed ? with sudden inspiration, I turned and wrote, in giant letters on the board:

And then I drew a circle AROUND and a diagonal slash THROUGH Mr. Darcy, as one might on a verboten no fumar sign at the train station of life.

And I felt my Marymount College girls actually shrink, and gasp.

"But that's what true liberation of the soul means!" I cried out, smacking my chalk triumphantly on the board, like a teeny tiny epee. "It's not like you put on your 'Save Darfur' T-shirt, march . . . and then go home to Mr. Darcy . . ."

At which point we entered a brief conversational snorl in which one of the girls argued that HER Mr. Darcy might well encourage her to march, as long as she went home every night to Mr. Darcy's estate at Pemberley, which she felt she could live with. Another imagined she could share a tent with HER Mr. Darcy in Darfur, perhaps Mr. Darcy was even the co-organizer of the Save Darfur effort . . . And now imagining the safari wear, the eco-carbon credits, and the tangle of yellow rubber Lance Armstrong bracelets, I was struck with a distinct, dismal Jane-Austen-novel-remade-as-a-summer-cable-TVmovie-starring-Matthew-McConaughey feeling. No!

"What I'm saying is, no matter what you do, at age forty . . . THE WHEELS COME OFF!

A pierced-nose student in a Frida Kahlo muscle T clarified it for her more flighty, foolish sisters: "She means for women, at forty, the TRAINING WHEELS come off ? "

"No!" I yelled. My upper lip was beaded with moisture, the room felt so hot. "THE WHEELS OF YOUR CAR! THEY SIMPLY! COME! OFF!"

The tragedy for Anna Karenina, of course, is that she lived in St. Petersburg in the 1870s rather than America in the 2000s. One no longer has to hurl oneself under a train upon turning forty ? there is medication for that. No, nowadays forty and all the ages like forty (which apparently can range up to fifty-two or even sixty-one) are a mystical opportunity to begin an inward journey of fabulous wisdoming. (On the back of a tea packet I saw it recently, used as a verb: "Wisdoming." Even the prose of our herbal tea nowadays is amazing!)

No, with proper hormonal and nutritional supplements, and a full tasting menu of Pfizer antidepressants, it's no longer necessarily a bad thing, this bursting-into-flames, this midlife "transition," this second adolescence ?

(Well, perhaps for the men it is bad, particularly for those who've already managed to live THEIR ENTIRE ADULT LIVES in a state of adolescence, and here I am thinking not of Count Vronsky of Russia but of my ex-boyfriend of Culver City, Count Bruce.)

Forty-something women, though?this kicking off of their calcified/thirty-something/Gail Sheehy/Passages lobster shells is the golden time. By God, they've EARNED their raucous "You go, girl!"s, their giddy high-fives with somewhat flabby upper arms (upon which shudder bold temporary tattoos), their raspberry-flavored tequila shots, their "Woo woo!"s gaily Dopplering out the back of the speeding-off Mustang. Lord love 'em, they deserve escape, these sparkle-eyed, plus-aged women, and makeovers, and perhaps a fashion spree, or at least a mad, buffalo-sized wicker basket of wildflower soaps, raffia twine tumbling everywhere amid a crazy menagerie of rose petals and tiny mad bottles of lotion ... AROMATHERAPY LITERALLY UNBOUND.

Yea, these women deserve it all, so long have they plowed in the arid fields of their marriages, with dull oxen husbands, in that ceaseless drumbeat of domestic tedium. Divorce is tragic ... but becomes a bold new start as, wiping tears, our heroine manages to pack just the one overnight bag and grab the red-eye to Portugal or Bali to live in a thatched-roof beach hut and feel the sand in her toes and wear a sarong and drink sangria and have a hot affair with a poetry-writing swordfisherman named Paolo who helps her shed her puritanical type A ways and teaches her about the tides. Come midnight, they tear off her bra and BURN it, howling, like wine-drunk Santa Fe coyotes, up at the stars!

The latest is the Quick Stand. At $40, it?s half the price of the original Aviiq stand, and it is also smaller, measuring up at 11 x 3.25 x 0.375 inches against 15 x 12 x 0.1 inches when folded.

This is no surprise, as instead of folding out to make a full laptop-sized platform, it just turns into a triangular wedge that props up the back of the computer. Think if it as an aluminum and plastic Smart Cover, only it?s not a cover (or actually that smart).

Weirdly though, despite being smaller, the new Quick Stand weighs a lot more than its big brother 5.5 ounces Vs. just 2.7 ounces. It would be made, perhaps, from Dark Matter instead of the aluminum and plastic ?Hylite? from which the current stands are fashioned.

Should you buy one? That depends. Propping up a notebook certainly helps to keep it cooler, but you don?t need a $40 widget to do that. Looking across my (admittedly rather cluttered) desk I see all manner of things which would raise my MacBook?s rear end up a couple of inches, and I suspect you can find some too. Available now.

Grave Discovery In Iraq Unearths Sectarian Unease

Workers excavate remains from a mass grave in the desert of western Anbar province in Iraq on April 14. The mass grave holds the remains of more than 800 people, believed to have been killed during the rule of ousted leader Saddam Hussein.

In western Iraq, authorities have discovered a mass grave they say holds the remains of more than 800 people who are thought to have been killed during the rule of Saddam Hussein.

It's believed the country has hundreds of mass graves from the Saddam era ? and countless new graves from more recent conflicts. But not all sites get the same treatment.

Into The Grave

Down in the recently discovered grave, a set of remains lies along with the person's belongings. All that's left of the person is a skeleton ? hip bone, joints, vertebrae. There's a skull with a bullet hole.

Local human rights chief Khudeir Hamdan says teams will take these skulls and test their DNA, then try to match them with DNA from families who have reported their loved ones missing.

Some of the remains were dressed in military uniforms, and some were in civilian clothes, he says. Some were women; some were children.

Hamdan says the victims are thought to be Kurds or Shiites ? the main groups that rose up against Saddam. And the same groups that are in power today.

"It fills me with grief and with pain and with bitterness, actually, because I know those people have been killed and dumped in this way only because they have expressed their political opinions," Hamdan says through an interpreter.

Sites like this will not be kept quiet for long. The government is quick to denounce Saddam, who was sentenced to death and executed in 2006. But critics say the government is slower to highlight other human rights abuses.

In recent months, during Iraq's wave of anti-government demonstrations, state TV ran hours of gruesome footage showing people who were tortured by Saddam. Protesters were later arrested and accused of being Baathists or Saddamists.

Hamdan says it's in the ruling party's interest to play up the atrocities of Saddam. Many people use such crimes for political gains, he says, to stay in power. But in some sense they have a right to do that, he says: They lost a lot to Saddam.

Dangerous Divisions?

Analysts in the West and in Iraq worry about this idea that there are winners and losers ? that the anti-Saddam Shiites have won, and the pro-Saddam Sunnis have lost.

They say this kind of sectarianism could have dangerous repercussions in a country only a few years beyond a brutal sectarian war, especially now, as sectarian divisions are beginning to surface outside Iraq as well.

Just last week, the Gulf Cooperation Council ? a bloc of Sunni-dominated countries led by Saudi Arabia ? threatened not to attend an Arab summit that was supposed to be held in Iraq next month that now has been postponed. Many believe that's because Shiite-dominated Iraq supports anti-government protesters in Sunni-run Bahrain.

Back at the grave, a photographer colleague covers the remains with black body bags and shovels dirt on top so the bags won't fly away.

No matter which side you're on, another colleague says later, it's a site that no one should have to see.

By now, you've probably watched — and subsequently re-watched — the Beastie Boys' new "Fight For Your Right Revisited" film, which premiered at midnight Thursday morning (April 21) on MTV2, mtvU, VH1 Classic and Palladia.

In theory, it's a tongue-in-cheek retrospective on the Beasties' early License To Ill days, picking up where their sublimely stoopid "(You Gotta) Fight For Your Right (To Party)" video left off, following Mike D, Ad-Rock and MCA — as played by Seth Rogen, Elijah Wood and Danny McBride, respectively — on a drunken spree that culminates in an epic dance battle against their future selves (John C. Reilly, Will Ferrell and Jack Black, just in case you're keeping score at home). But really, it works just as well as a rather-involved exercise in cameo spotting, as seemingly everyone in the universe pops up for a frame or three.

Thankfully, the Beasties were nice enough to include a list of co-stars in the closing credits. Our favorites include Susan Sarandon and Stanley Tucci as the bewildered parents who interrogate the Beasties post-party, Will Arnett as a businessman who gives a shout-out to "Arrested Development" ("COME ON!") and Orlando Bloom's inexplicable three-second cameo as a window washer in a Def Jam windbreaker. But there seems to be a batch of uncredited cameos too — we're pretty sure we saw Danny Masterson and Zach Galifianakis in there. In fact, outside of some of Michael Jackson's biggest videos ("Liberian Girl" and "Remember the Time" come to mind), "Fight For Your Right Revisited" might very well be the most celeb-heavy video of all time.

But, as we said, "Fight For Your Right" is also so much more. And while you were busy trying to keep track of all the cameos, you probably failed to notice some of the film's subtler moments — nods to the Beasties' past and present, the majority of which pass by with blink-and-you'll-miss-it speed. Here are five we've noticed. And while we've watched the thing no less than a dozen times, we're sure there are some we missed. Let us know in the comments below!

Chateau Ted el Michel Dée:
This is the name of the French restaurant the Beasties stumble into (and subsequently tumble out of). The maitre d? None other than Ted Danson (Steve Buscemi is a waiter, and the clientele includes everyone from Roman Coppola to Laura Dern). Roughly translated, the phrase means "The castle of Ted and Mike D," which is not only a nod to a lyric from "Make Some Noise" (as D spits, "Opened up a restaurant with Ted Danson") but, whether the Beasties knew it or not, is also an eerily prescient preview of season three of HBO's "Bored To Death," in which Danson's droll, endlessly toking George Christopher opens up a restaurant.

Nathanial Hornblower:
Swiss-born director/alias of Beastie Boy Adam Yauch, Hornblower has helmed many Beastie videos over the years and famously stormed the stage at the 1994 MTV Video Music Awards after the "Sabotage" video lost out to R.E.M.'s "Everybody Hurts," calling the show "a farce" and claiming he had come up with the original idea for "Star Wars." In "Fight For Your Right Revisited," it's comedian David Cross who dons Hornblower's famed lederhosen, reprising a role he first took on in the short "A Day in the Life of Nathanial Hornblower."

"Shake Your Rump":
Song from the Beasties' epochal Paul's Boutique album, released as a single with accompanying multi-cam, ultra-low-budget video (seriously, it's little more than each of the B-Boys rapping into a camera, which is cut together in rhythm with the song). It might be a stretch, but we don't think we were the only ones who noticed that, in "Fight For Your Right Revisited," when Will Ferrell's mariachi plays a cowbell atop a limousine, the performance is shot and edited in much the same fashion.

Stuyvesant High School:
Manhattan public school forever immortalized by Ad-Rock, who wore a Stuyvesant Physical Education T-shirt in the original "Fight For Your Right" video. This lead to rumors that Ad-Rock had attended the school, when, in fact, it was original Beasties drummer Kate Schellenbach (as Mike D would reveal to Time magazine years later). The shirt is, of course, replicated in "Revisited."

Vincent van Gogh:
Dutch post-Impressionist painter most famous for works like "Starry Night," and, of course, cutting off his own ear and giving it to a prostitute for safe keeping. In "Revisited," Jason Schwartzman can be seen with bandages wrapped around his head, much like van Gogh's 1889 self-portrait (painted post ear-chopping). This is probably a nod to the Paul's Boutique track "Hey Ladies," which features a shout-out to van Gogh "mailing that ear."

He managed relationships with the UK government, the Mayor of London, the London Development Agency and the London and international business and diplomatic community. He also has extensive experience working across global markets in a wide variety of sectors and in developing business opportunities in Asia Pacific, North America, Europe and South Africa. Additionally, Charlton is a Chartered Accountant and trained and spent 10 years with KPMG.

Commenting on the appointment of Michael Charlton as Head of International Sales, Minister for Economic Development, Allan Bell, said that: ?This is a key appointment not only for the Department, but also for the island as a whole. Increasingly, the island?s future prosperity depends on attracting more new business, not just from the UK but from much further afield. But if you want to get in on the action, you have to be prepared: the sightings last about a minute because the ISS is speeding at five miles per second. That lets it travel around the Earth in 90 minutes.

Beatty says it's worth the effort, though. Using simple binoculars, he said, you'll be able to make out the shape, because right now, the ISS is huge. It's now complete ? all the pieces are where they should be ? making it a shiny reflective object that's the size of a football field.

There's also no mistaking it, said Beatty. "The motion is very stately," he said. "You wouldn't mistake it for a meteor, because a meteor is just a momentary flash; you wouldn't mistake it for a plane, because they have blinking lights. Right now, it's a slam dunk to spot the Space Station."

OK, so how can you spot it? Beatty sent over three websites that let you input your city or zipcode and they spit out where and when to look:

You'll get the best look, said Beatty, when the Space Station passes right overhead.

And Beatty wants you to remember to wave. Six astronauts are on board, right now, on the ISS's 27th expedition.

On a conference call Wednesday morning, CFO Rick Lindner said the first quarter without iPhone exclusivity went better than expected and predicted the Verizon Wireless competition won't show bigger effects in the near future. "We?re not expecting any changes in churn rates over the next few months," he said.

Tablets and similar data-only products also helped the telecom giant's results. AT&T said it sold 421,000 of these devices to reach 3.4 million, twice as many as a year ago. Tablets made up the bulk of the growth with 322,000 additions in the quarter.

AT&T's first-quarter profit of $3.4 billion was up 36 percent from $2.5 billion in the same quarter in 2010. Revenue rose 2.3 percent to $31.2 billion.
